Moyeen, the fourth out of five children was raised in a traditional Nigerian family where respect, family values, and education, most especially, are essential. She always knew she wanted to sing but learned at an early age that to be “successful” she’d have to follow the traditional path of being either a medical doctor, lawyer, accountant, architect, or engineer.
So it was no surprise when an aquaintance, who noticed her passion for music, told her
"olodo lon korin!" ! Which means “only the unintelligent sing!”. Although discouraged, Moyeen continued belting notes (in private) and began writing her own material.
After moving to Carrollton Georgia, she sang and wrote in the 7-man reggae-rock band, which later coined the local hit “We All Want to be Free”. Despite their success, the band’s momentum came to a halt when members pursued different career paths.
She says:
"When we disbanded, I felt like a part of me had died. I cried. I mean, I never
saw it coming, but then again maybe I did but ignored it. What can I say?
I am a hopeful romantic even when it comes to music."
Despite the setback, Moyeen moved to Atlanta for college and continued writing and performing mostly with gypsy bands. She loved the practice and the performances, but paid for it in Starbucks dollars and heavy eyelids at 8am classes. Nevertheless, her passion and drive for music made it all worthwhile. Moyeen's energy has been described as contagious; her personality remarkable and her voice: velvet smooth. She says,
“Personality wise, I'll say am a free spirit, Although I can be serious minded,
I don’t take myself too seriously. On the contrary, I am quite playful.
You'll see that sprinkled in my music”.
She is currently working on her debut album. Her singles "Closer to You", "Ribbon on My Door" and "Alagbada Ina", are already getting rave reviews at her live performances and listening parties.
